Do you know who isn’t going on a vacation this summer?
Your local burglar. While you’re planning your getaway, he’s plotting his next break-in. Don’t make life easy for him. Follow these summer security tips to guard your home while you’re away.
1. Think like a burglar
What would a thief see if he looked at your home? A ladder left near a widow? Overgrown shrubs where he could hide? A dog door? Can you see valuables from outside the home?
2. Don’t advertise your vacation
It’s nice to share photos of your vacation on Facebook, but that may be something you want to save until you get back. Try to get your kids to do the same. Announcing your trip on social media is the 21st century equivalent of letting a bunch of newspapers pile up on your porch.
3. Stop your mail/newspaper
On that note, you should still make sure to stop your newspaper and your mail while you’re away, or have a friend/neighbor pick them up. You should also mow your lawn before you leave, or have someone mow while you’re gone.
4. Check your windows
It’s tempting to leave windows open during warm weather, but while you may be keeping your home cool, you’re also offering intruders another way inside.
5. Get to know your neighbors
Even if your community doesn’t have a block watch, you still have neighbors watching your block. Get to know them. Ask your neighbors to keep an eye on things while you’re on vacation. You can even have someone park their car in your driveway so it looks like you’re home, and return the favor when they’re out of town.
6. Use a light timer
These devices are inexpensive and can be used to turn on lights or televisions on and off to make it appear like someone is home. You can also download an app that will allow you to do this remotely.
7. Mark your devices
Engrave your driver’s license number onto your electronics – computers, TVs, video game systems, etc. – in case of theft. You may also want to take photos of your valuables and record their model/serial numbers somewhere offsite.
8. Get an alarm system
Homes that have an alarm system Bucks PA are three times less likely to be broken into than homes without an alarm. An alarm system – complete with a sticker in your window and a sign on your lawn – works as an incredible deterrent.
